More National Guard Troops Will Be In D.C. Wednesday Night, White House Says

Topline

The National Guard will send more troops into Washington, D.C., Wednesday night, a White House official confirmed to Forbes in an email, deploying the Guardsmen to support hundreds of federal agents in the capital as President Donald Trump looks to extend his crackdown and control of the city’s police force beyond 30 days.

Key Facts

More National Guard troops will be in D.C. on Wednesday night, supporting federal patrols that will shift to around-the-clock operations instead of being limited to evening and night assignments.

Around 150 National Guardsmen were deployed on D.C.’s streets Tuesday night, a fraction of the 800 members activated as part of the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.”

The White House, which did not provide a number on how many members would be deployed Wednesday night, has said the National Guard is assisting federal agents in a supportive capacity and are not able to make arrests themselves.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
