Key Facts
Issues with X appeared to spike shortly after 10:40 a.m. EDT, and more than 16,200 users reported issues with the social media platform by 11:08 a.m., according to DownDetector.
Most of the problems (53%) were reported with X’s app while 45% of complaints addressed website issues and 1% experienced server connection issues.
X did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment, and its developer platform status page indicated “all systems are operational” as of 11:25 a.m.
Key Background
Musk called for “major operational improvements” to X in May, citing another outage experienced by the social media platform. Thousands of users reported issues with website and app functionality on May 22, and nearly 26,000 outage reports were received two days later. Another outage on May 30 recorded more than 30,000 outage reports on DownDetector. Earlier this year, Musk claimed X was targeted in a “massive cyberattack” by “either a large, coordinated group and/or a country.” Some cybersecurity experts disputed Musk’s claims that a state actor was responsible. Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at the National Cybersecurity Alliance, told Forbes that while state actors or organized cybercriminal groups conduct large-scale attacks, it’s also possible for “smaller groups or even individuals to launch significant disruptions.”
